Completing the Square GCSE Questions

Higher tierAQA A11, A18EdexcelOCR20 questions · 61 marks

Completing the square rewrites a quadratic like x2+6x+5x^2 + 6x + 5 in the form (x+a)2+b(x + a)^2 + b. It is a Higher tier GCSE skill that lets you solve quadratics that won't factorise, find the turning point of a curve without drawing it, and prove an expression is always positive. These 20 questions start with simple warm-ups and build to full exam-style and grade 8–9 challenge questions, each with a step-by-step worked answer.

How to complete the square

  1. Halve the coefficient of xx to get the number inside the bracket: x2+6x→(x+3)2x^2 + 6x \to (x + 3)^2.
  2. Subtract the square of that number, because (x+3)2=x2+6x+9(x + 3)^2 = x^2 + 6x + 9 adds an extra 99.
  3. Tidy up the constants: x2+6x+5=(x+3)2−9+5=(x+3)2−4x^2 + 6x + 5 = (x + 3)^2 - 9 + 5 = (x + 3)^2 - 4.
  4. If x2x^2 has a coefficient, factor it out of the x2x^2 and xx terms first.

Key facts

  • x2+bx+c=(x+b2)2−(b2)2+cx^2 + bx + c = \left(x + \tfrac{b}{2}\right)^2 - \left(\tfrac{b}{2}\right)^2 + c
  • The turning point of y=(x+a)2+by = (x + a)^2 + b is (−a, b)(-a,\ b).
  • A squared term is never negative, so (x+a)2+b≥b(x + a)^2 + b \ge b for every xx.
  • To solve, rearrange to (x+a)2=k(x + a)^2 = k, then square root both sides — remember ±\pm.

Common mistakes

  • Forgetting to subtract the square: x2+6x≠(x+3)2x^2 + 6x \ne (x + 3)^2.
  • Getting the sign of the turning point wrong: (x−3)2+2(x - 3)^2 + 2 has turning point (3,2)(3, 2), not (−3,2)(-3, 2).
  • Losing the negative root when square rooting — always write ±\pm.
  • Factoring out a coefficient but forgetting to multiply it back into the subtracted square.
