Algebraic Fractions GCSE Questions

Higher tierAQA A4, A18EdexcelOCR20 questions · 63 marks

Algebraic fractions work just like number fractions, but with letters: you simplify by cancelling common factors, and you add or subtract by finding a common denominator. The key skill is factorising first, so that a common factor like (x+3)(x + 3) can cancel. Algebraic fractions are Higher tier only. These 20 questions build from simplifying to grade 8–9 equations, each with a step-by-step worked answer.

How to simplify algebraic fractions

  1. To simplify, factorise the top and the bottom fully, then cancel any factor that appears in both: x2+5xx2−25=x(x+5)(x+5)(x−5)=xx−5\dfrac{x^2 + 5x}{x^2 - 25} = \dfrac{x(x + 5)}{(x + 5)(x - 5)} = \dfrac{x}{x - 5}.
  2. To add or subtract, write both fractions over a common denominator: 2x+3x+1=2(x+1)+3xx(x+1)\dfrac{2}{x} + \dfrac{3}{x + 1} = \dfrac{2(x + 1) + 3x}{x(x + 1)}.
  3. To multiply, factorise everything, cancel, then multiply the tops together and the bottoms together.
  4. To divide, turn the second fraction upside down and multiply.
  5. To solve an equation, multiply every term by the common denominator to clear the fractions, then solve.

Key facts

  • You can only cancel factors, not terms: x+3x+5\dfrac{x + 3}{x + 5} does not simplify.
  • ab+cd=ad+bcbd\dfrac{a}{b} + \dfrac{c}{d} = \dfrac{ad + bc}{bd}
  • ab÷cd=ab×dc\dfrac{a}{b} \div \dfrac{c}{d} = \dfrac{a}{b} \times \dfrac{d}{c}
  • In exam questions, the factor that cancels usually appears once you have factorised both parts fully.

Common mistakes

  • Cancelling terms instead of factors: x+6x+2\dfrac{x + 6}{x + 2} is not 62\dfrac{6}{2}.
  • Forgetting the bracket when subtracting: −(x−3)=−x+3-(x - 3) = -x + 3.
  • Multiplying only some of the terms by the common denominator when solving an equation.
  • Not factorising fully, so a common factor is missed.
