Solving Linear Equations GCSE Questions

Foundation & HigherAQA A17, A21EdexcelOCR24 questions · 69 marks

A linear equation like 3x+5=203x + 5 = 20 has one unknown, and no powers of xx higher than 11. You solve it by doing the same thing to both sides until xx is on its own. Linear equations are on both Foundation and Higher papers, often hidden inside questions on angles, perimeters, ages and money. These 24 questions climb from one-step warm-ups to grade 8–9 problems, each with a step-by-step worked answer.

How to solve a linear equation

  1. Expand any brackets: 5(x−2)=355(x - 2) = 35 becomes 5x−10=355x - 10 = 35.
  2. Clear fractions by multiplying every term by the denominator, or by the lowest common multiple of the denominators.
  3. Collect the xx terms on one side and the numbers on the other. Move the smaller xx term so you keep a positive number of xxs.
  4. Divide both sides by the number in front of xx.
  5. Check by substituting your answer back into the original equation.

Key facts

  • Whatever you do to one side, do to the other side.
  • Moving a term to the other side changes its sign: x+7=12x + 7 = 12 gives x=12−7x = 12 - 7.
  • In a word problem, choose a letter for the unknown, write the equation, solve it, then answer the question that was asked.
  • The answer can be a fraction or a negative number.

Common mistakes

  • Only multiplying one term by the denominator: in x3+2=5\tfrac{x}{3} + 2 = 5, the 22 and the 55 must be multiplied by 33 too.
  • Getting the sign wrong when moving a term: 4x−7=94x - 7 = 9 gives 4x=164x = 16, not 4x=24x = 2.
  • Forgetting to multiply out every term in a bracket: −3(2x−1)=−6x+3-3(2x - 1) = -6x + 3.
  • Stopping at xx when the question asks for something else, such as the largest angle.
