Rearranging Formulae GCSE Questions

Foundation & HigherAQA A5EdexcelOCR24 questions · 60 marks

Rearranging a formula, or changing its subject, means getting a different letter on its own. If v=u+atv = u + at, then t=v−uat = \dfrac{v - u}{a}. You use the same steps as solving an equation, but the answer is an expression instead of a number. Rearranging is on both Foundation and Higher papers; formulae with squares, roots or the subject in two places appear on Higher papers. These 24 questions climb from warm-ups to grade 8–9 problems, each with a step-by-step worked answer.

How to rearrange a formula

  1. Treat the new subject as the unknown, and every other letter as if it were a number.
  2. Undo the operations around the subject in reverse order: add or subtract first, then multiply or divide.
  3. Clear fractions by multiplying both sides by the denominator.
  4. Undo a square with a square root, and a square root by squaring both sides.
  5. If the subject appears twice, collect both terms on one side, factorise it out, then divide.

Key facts

  • Whatever you do to one side, do to the whole of the other side.
  • Write the subject on the left: t=v−uat = \dfrac{v - u}{a}, not v−ua=t\dfrac{v - u}{a} = t (both are correct, but this is the convention).
  • A fraction bar acts like a bracket: divide the whole top by the bottom.
  • You can check by substituting numbers into the old and new formulae.

Common mistakes

  • Dividing only one term: y=3x+5y = 3x + 5 gives x=y−53x = \dfrac{y - 5}{3}, not x=y3−5x = \dfrac{y}{3} - 5.
  • Square-rooting each term separately: v2−2as\sqrt{v^2 - 2as} is not v−2asv - \sqrt{2as}.
  • Leaving the subject on both sides of the answer.
  • Losing a sign when the subject has a minus in front: y=7−2xy = 7 - 2x gives x=7−y2x = \dfrac{7 - y}{2}.
